Since the end of Qing Dynasty (1911), a variety of new ideas have exerted great impact among intellectuals in Zhejiang with the disintegration of natural economy and rapid development of national capitalism. The conflict between the old thinking and new thoughts became inevitable, as one after another student movement arose in Zhejiang. After the1919May Fourth movement, Zhejiang No.1Teacher’s College, under the leadship of Jing Hengyi, rose as a center for the spread of new culture and new thoughts. The Zhejiang No.1Teacher’s College Incident (the Incident), broke out during the spring of1920, exemplifies an important round of the confrontation between old and new thoughts in Zhejiang, which picked up the tradition of May Fourth Movement. The paper would make a case study of the Incident. By focusing on its social background and political foundation and its main call, it will analyze the relationship between’NO.1Teacher’s College Incident’and new cultural movement in Zhejiang province, and dissects the Incident’s impact on the new cultural movement in Zhejiang. Further, it will also explore the Incident’s boosting effect on the spread of Maxism in Zhejiang and the building of regional communist party network in Zhejiang. As a monumental student movement at the time, the Incident becomes one of the most outstanding student movements in China at the time. It has far-reaching impact as it removes the obstacles for the spread of New Culture Movement in Zhejiang.
