Picture books are the most accessible type of reading material for children in their early stage of reading. The design and drafting of a picture book implies practical requirements from various aspects including guidance, communication and cultivation. The visual language that a picture book describes and delivers tends to have a deep impact on the thinking and mentality of a child during his or her growth.In this article, we analysed the new issues and requirements on a picture book that the diversity of modern media has raised under the impact of popular culture in digital times, through an investigation into the current status of Chinese picture book design. The integrated design of typical cases of Chinese picture books published in the last five years was analysed with the time and space dimensions of design. Through a comparison between the domestic original picture books and those imported, innovative concepts and approaches for picture book design were discussed. The underlying guidance of the design language of picture books on a child’s cognition and emotion was investigated, as well as the important impact of picture book reading on his or her growth. The shortcomings and directions for improvement in Chinese picture book design in new times were discussed, in order for picture book reading to leave a positive impact and profound memory in one’s childhood.
