| Reading is a fundamental and essential skill for language learners to input to comprehensible information.Reading instruction is an integral part in teaching Chinese as the second language,particularly in light of the increasing number of school-aged foreign children learning Chinese.As such,there is a significant challenge for educators to cultivate children’s interest in reading and to develop their reading proficiency.Picture books a story reading material which are graph-based,text-based,they have single-picture scenarios and are formed with multiple pictures strung together.While picture books are a popular resource for children both domestically and abroad,and are recognized for their pedagogical value in language teaching,research reveals that picture books are mainly employed for oral language and cultural instruction in foreign Chinese classrooms.Little has been studied or applied in terms of using picture books for reading instruction,and the number of picture books utilized in foreign Chinese classrooms is limited.Moreover,their level of professionalism and suitability is not always optimal,and there is a lack of practical guidelines for their integration.This study employs Krashen’s second language acquisition theory,Piaget’s cognitive development theory,and PIRLS Reading Literacy content ae well as combining the topics,vocabulary,grammar,and language functions of the New Syllabus for Youth Chinese Test(Level 3)and its companion textbook namend YCT Standard Course 3 to design picture books that employ both images and text.These resources can be used with students aged 7-11 in YCT courses or other Chinese courses for non-native speakers with a fundamental knowledge of Chinese.Additionally,based on the characteristics of the picture book itself,the paper discusses teaching strategies for incorporating picture book into reading instruction in recognition,comprehension and application,the prepares instructional design to provide a comprehensive resource for teachers to implement picture books into teaching Chinese language.Through objective analysis in teaching effectiveness,the paper summarizes the instructional outcomes of picture book utilization in foreign language reading instruction,and provides recommendations for using picture books in foreign language reading,as well as advice for the design of picture books for foreign language instruction.The study aims to provide valuable guidance for teaching Chinese as a foreign language. |
