Research On The Colour Of Miantang School Thangka Painting

After the15th century, following the increasingly concern about Tibetan culture, Miantang School, as one of the most influential Thangka painting schools, had gradually become an attractive painting art. It has been well known that Miantang School was one of the most widespread and representative Thangka Painting Schools and it was distinct by its unique colourful feature. Miantang School was famous for its applying of Thangka painting lines, various colours, which merits a more in-depth study and discussion. However, according to the researches on Tibetan Buddhist art, it can be seen that the Thangka colour painting study is still in the initial phase. Based on the completely understanding about all aspects of the Thangka colour painting of Miantang School, the combination of the existing researches on Tibetan Buddhist art and the practical fieldworks of a large number of Thangka creative paintings at Miantang School, this paper therefore aims to explore areas of the colour style of the Thangka painting on a certain level:1, this paper has reviewed the Tibetan historical information, paintings, art-related people, the well known Tibetan caves and theoretical writing works of paintings in the historical period from the Songtsan Tibetan era to the Gelug Gandan age (the7th-19th century).2, according to the detailed analysis on Thangka painting in the areas of the Wutun Village, the under Wutun Village and their surrounding regions, this paper also has comprehensively discussed the colour style of Miantang School Thangka painting in the Regong area including the painting form in the Regong district, the painting styles, the pigments and the canvas styles, religious culture and so forth.3, the function and significance of colour research for the Thangka painting protection have been well-developed in this paper.Following the exploration of the Tibetan historical and cultural events, this paper has discussed the Miantang School thangka painting colour styles in details. A specific attempt about the related questions of the Thangka painting colour in the areas of the Wutun Village and the under Wutun Village has been presented, which allows our understanding of Miantang school painting Thangka colour style and colour of Miantang school Thangka painting style formation to be more precisely.
