Ye Qianyu was an artist famous for his cartoon and traditional Chinese painting in20th century. The lines in his paintings have the features of skehches、line drawing and cartoon, which is steady,accurate and concise. Ye Qianyu combined the color of the literati painting with the folk art. Whether the composition、color or character modeling, Ye Qianyu’s portrait paingtings have the unqie sense of rhythm. It is a new generation of the portrait painting, which is the evaluation to him. Ye Qianyu was deeply influenced by the traditional culture and folk art. The images of his painting were directly from life. His works not only are concise freehand with elegant and aesthetic features, but aslo have the fresh and plain aesthetic of the folk art. His portrait paintings are the larger breakthrough at that time.The paper aims at the portrait painting of Ye Qianyu, Historical corroboration combined with the works comment are both needed in the study. The paper focuses on the forms and languages, together with the aesthetic qualities and cultural connotations.The paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter expounds the origine of the figure painting, the value of the works is aslo included. Most of the existing research are tend to the cartoon and dance-portrais paitings. While, this paper aims at the hoslistic analysis. In chapter two, the paper explores that why Ye Qianyu created these portrait paintings. Ye Qianyu was an artist with a sense of historical responsibility. His works is the fusion of East and West, his works feflects the changes of the era, He was seeking the innovation forwarding the traditional way. These are the conclusions. In chapter there, the paper points out the differences between Ye Qianyu’patings and others, as well as the elaluation from, other, next, to compare with other portrait painters in that era, and to analysis the forms and the languages of Ye Qianyu’s portrait paintings. In chapter four, the article combines Ye Qianyu’s representative works with his painting theory and the existing research to analysis the aesthetic characteristics from the folk art perspective. The fifth chapter studies the cultural connotation of the painting. The paper is intended to be more objective in understanding Ye Qianyu’s portrait paintings, furthermore, to define contribution of Ye Qianyu in the Chinese portrait painting and Art history.
