The Chinese water-ink Animation——Feelings of Mountains and Waters, which was finished in1988, was the last Chinese water-ink Animation made by Shanghai Animation Film Studio after the animation Little Tadpole looking for mom (1960), The Cowboy’s Flute (1963) and Deer Ling (1982). From1960s to1980s, a number of outstanding artists, musicians, animation artists worked hand in hand to create a new kind of animation——Chinese water-ink Animation on the basis of traditional Chinese ink painting and Chinese animation. The birth of Chinese water-ink Animation shocked the international animation:all people were amazed by its unique form and profound culture. Due to a variety of reasons, the Chinese water-ink Animation was once stagnant in1990s. This paper mainly focus on Feelings of Mountains and Waters, which was regarded as the representative works of the Chinese water-ink Animations for its maturity and attainment. Based on the reflections of the creators’of the movie and the traditional Chinese ink painting culture, combined with artistic effects of the animation, this paper will analyze the story, the visual and musical performance and the content of the animation to summarize the distinguishing feature of this animation. In the end of the paper,I talked about the problems which the Chinese water-ink Animation faced with and the outlook for its future development. I hope this research can lead to more animation fans to have a deeper exploration on the early Chinese classical animation features.
