Textual Research On The Literati Nan Xi

The Literati Nan Xi is an important part in the Chinese Xiqu Opera History. However, it is often ignored because the academic filed doesn’t pay much attention to the Xiqu development between the late Yuan/early Ming dynasty and the Jiajing Period in Qing Dynasty. Actually, the Literati Nan Xi connects the Nanxi in the Song&Yuan Dynasties and Chuan-qi Drama in the Ming&Qing Dynasties. It plays a key role in enriching the writing interest of Xiqu, standardizing the Qulv and improving the performance. This thesis discusses the Literati Nan Xi in following three parts.The first chapter is mainly about the writing interest of Nan Xi. The writing interest contains the "edification","conversion","emotion expression" and "talent demonstration". The first two are coming from the Nanxi in the Song&Yuan Dynasties. The latter two are brought by the playwroghts, which are the particular characteristics in the Literati Nan Xi. These four interests have their own origins and are inherited by the Chuan-qi Drama. They have a profound effect in the development of Xiqu.The second chapter talks about the Qulv of the Literati Nan Xi. This Qulv is very complicated and of varying quality. This condition is cause by the heritage of the Qulv of Nan Xi in Song&Yuan dynasty. In addition, there was few specialists of Qulv who can standardize the Qulv. This condition was also inherited by the Chuan-qi Drama. As a result, the specialists in the later ages were forced to rectify the Qulv of Nan Xi and Chuan-qi Drama and make them more and more standard. We should use dynamic ways to consider the specific problems of Qulv by recognizing both the phase and variety before we making then correct judgment.The third chapter discussed the performance of the Literati Nan Xi. The Literati Nan Xi is not an on desk creation. They are welcome on stage. Some of them are very popular. The high standard and strict requirement of the performance of the Literati Nan Xi are far away beyond the folk performance. They deeply affect the performance of the Chuan-qi Drama in the late ages, and pave the way of the standardization and improvement for the Chines Xiqu performance.
