As a peak period of Chinese literature, Chinese classic poetry of the TangDynasty is famous for its ingenious images of condensed cultural connotation. Thepoets condense their emotions and feelings in the images in combination of certaincultural background personal experiences, enduing them with abundant sentimentmeaning and cultural connotation, which makes the poetry more touching andexpressive. The beauty of poetry lies in the images, thus their translation is well worthstudying. Since all of the poetic images are of rich cultural information, actually thereproduction of them means the exchange between two different cultures.Andre Lefevere and Susan Bassnett propose the concept of “cultural turn” ontranslation, which focuses more on the internal relation between culture and translation, providing a favorable theoretic instruction to the reproduction of the cultural images inthe poems. This thesis tries to discuss the effective reproduction of images in Tang poemsfrom the perspective of cross-cultural translation, which also contributes to the realunderstanding of Chinese culture among foreigners. Firstly, this thesis states thewriting background, the features of the image and its close connection betweenlanguage and culture, bringing forward the ideas of cross-cultural translation. Afteranalyzing the difficulty of poetic image reproduction, this thesis intensively discusses the enlightenment of cross-cultural translation on image reproduction and putsforward two basic principles of meaning equivalence and prior consideration offoreignization in poetic image reproduction. Then the author further summarizes threemain methods of image reproduction with many examples, attempting to reproducethe poetic images effectively and retain the original cultural characters. At last theauthor comes to the conclusion of this thesis and states the room for improvement onfuture relative study. The Three Hundred Tang Poems compiled by Hengtang retreatscholar is a collection of many classic Tang poems, which are very typical, thus theexample analyses are mostly taken from it.
