Study On English Translation Of Images In Tang Poems On Departure:a Psychological Approach

Tang poems are a gem in Chinese literature.In the history of English translation of Chinese literature,Tang poetry occupies an important position.Translating Tang poems into English for English readers to have an opportunity to know and appreciate them is not only the demand for the communication between Chinese and Western literature,but also the need for conveying the aesthetic tastes and psychology of Chinese people.As the soul of classical Chinese poems,translation of images in poems will directly decide whether the aesthetic emotion in the images can be transferred or not,which is one of the key and difficult points in translating Tang poems.This thesis takes English translation of images in Tang poems as the research object,studying from the perspective of psychology rather than traditional discipline of linguistics.The principle of isomorphism and the collective unconscious are feasible and explanatory in the generation and transmission of images,removing the vagueness in traditional Chinese image theory,providing scientific theoretical basis for translators to comprehend the connotation of images.This thesis studies images in 33 poems on departure selected from Three Hundred Tang Poems and classifies these images according to the classification method of Chinese traditional image theory.Through an elaborate textual analysis of the translation of typical images of each category,this thesis probes into the underlying cause of the generation of the images.Based on it,the thesis explores the translation strategies of different images.The findings of the study are expected to help translators recognize and realize the influence of psychology in the process of translation,notice the difference between the poets and the target readers to better comprehend and translate these images.Meanwhile,it may also be helpful to enlarge the scope and add to the perspectives of translation studies.Therefore,to a degree,this study is of both theoretical and practical significance to translation of images in poems.
