Tang He, an outstanding senior Chinese composer, music theorist, and music calligrapher, occupies a significant position in the developmental history of the modern Chinese music. As a representative of army composers, he devoted his lifelong efforts and enthusiasm to the revolutionary work of art. He created The Troops Advancing in the1940s, By the River outside the Village in the1950s, The Long March Suite, Collective Efforts Bringing Happy Blooming Flowers, and In Profound Memory of Premier Zhou in the1960s, Our Tomorrow Is More Sweet Than Honey and Our Life Is Filled with Sunlight in the1970s, The Song of Peony in the1980s, and The People’s Republic of China Is Most Beautiful in the1990s. These outstanding works have long been sung and passed down. His artistic accomplishments in creating songs have made outstanding contributions to the development of Chinese music. The wide range of themes of the outstanding music works created in different periods and their amazing number are rare in the modern history of Chinese music. His works are among the valuable cultural legacies in the Chinese music.To honor Tang He’s contributions to the music of our country, the Chinese Musicians Association and China Federation of Literature and Art awarded him the "Gold Bell Award Certificate for Chinese Music "and "Lifelong Honorary Medal" in December2003.Tang He explores the genre of military songs with great innovation. In different historical periods, military songs express different contents in different forms. Through creating and studying the military songs in the different historical periods, he greatly pushes forward the development of military songs in China. He believes,"Musicians can produce better music works by dating back to the history and looking into the future." This paper covers Tang He’s life, background, the subject matter and types of his works, and the characteristics, contents, and forms of his artistic creation. It also includes his pursuit of aesthetics in music. It is the author’s purpose, through this research, to expound Tang He’s works systematically, summarize the characteristics of his artistic creation, and improve the ability to collect and analyze historical data. This paper primarily uses the methods of music literature and music analysis to analyze such components in Tang He’s works as structure, singing patterns, melodies, and tunes. The author hopes, through studying and generalizing Tang He’s music works, to analyze Tang He’s aesthetic views on music and give a factual evaluation of him and his influence on the future.
