A Study Of Eileen Chang’s Translation

Eileen Chang is known to us as a novelist, who is famous all over the world. She has a second status of being a translator, and her outstanding command of English together with her fabulous writing skills gave her a special position in the field of translation, which has been shadowed for a long time. In the1940s, Fu Lei used the name of Xun Yu to write an article named On Novels Written by Eileen Chang, which started the researches on Eileen Chang. In China and overseas, researches on Eileen Chang mainly consists of two parts: the studies about her life experiences and researches about her writing texts. Along with the development of the study, Chang’s translation has caught people’s attention and more researches have been done in this field.Eileen Chang is a typical translator since the translations she has done covers many fields, including inter-lingual translation, intra-lingual translation and self-translation.This thesis consists of7chapters. Chapter One presents the motivation of this thesis, the research background, the methodologies used in writing and the structure of this thesis. Chapter Two gives an introduction to Chang’s life experience, including the relationship between her and foreign literature and an analysis about the neglect of her status as a translator. Chapter Three, Chapter Four and Chapter Five focus on Chang’s translating practices:including her translation of The Old Man and The Sea as an example of the intra-lingual translation, The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai as an example of inter-lingual translation and The Gold Cangue as an example of self-translation.Chapter Six gives a summary on the specialties of Eileen Chang’s translating. The last part gives a conclusion of the thesis and points out the questions which need further researches.
