Since the1970s, the spatial turn in critical theory of capitalism is indispensable forunderstanding the contemporary world. It has become evident that the urbanization, theuneven development, and the fundamental spatial developments of moderncapitalism-such as the production of space, the spatial fix, the flexible accumulation-have manifested the advent of a spatial age. Considering of the general spatial patternsthat characterize the twentieth century, a number of theorists, especially Henri Lefebvre,David Harvey as well as Edward Soja, attempt to overcome traditional temporal modeof narration and develop a critical social theory that would be more adequate to thecapitalist epoch. If the reassertion over space in critical social theory is valid for modernsociety, what we should also reflect is whether the temporal discourse is outdated. Interms of modern urbanization of China, our theoretical concerns about the spatial turnshould proceed on the basis of a sophisticated understanding of Marx’s theory as acritical analysis of capitalism.
