The essay discusses the versions, the process of its handing down, the years of its creation, and the painters, etc, from the scope of three versions of "Ascending the River at Qing Ming Festival", and analyzes how the system passed down from generation to generation under the different backgrounds of art and history in three periods.At first, the author begins the essay from the common artistic form of expression——" manuscripts", and then the author penetrates the similarities and differences as well as the underlying meanings of these images, concluding three popular "Painting style" and analyzing different cultural meaning from details.Last but not least, from the perspective of social culture, it is proven that "Ascending the River at Qingming Festival" has been modeled, deducted and explained repeatedly as a theme which was given historical and social meaning. Sparing no trouble in repeating does not originate from the exhausted creativity, but because of the particular cultural contexts, which requires the masterpieces to act as the carrier of society and culture. Whether the original wild style version, or the poetry-like Ming dynasty version and the luxury Qing dynasty version, each graph is closely related to the production of its social environment and political scenarios. It also shows that the painting theme can reflect the different ideas and artistic styles, as well as aesthetic implication under the artistic context. They both have the relationship and distinction. In this context, the three "Ascending the River at Qing Ming Festival" is the most distinctive example of the Chinese painting evolution history.This paper studies the change and development of this topic, and provide important theoretical basis for the study of the painting evolution sharing the same name.
