Using GIS To Study Urban Placenames Evolution And City Renewal In Chengdu

Placenames was originated from the primitive people’s awareness and choice ofgeographical environment. It is a language symbol used to identify and remember theimportant place. Urban placenames is accompanied by the development of the city. Itis one of the important ways to convey urban culture. The formation and developmentof the Urban placenames is closely related to the development of the city’s geography,history, politics, culture, economy, military and human language and so on. Peoplecan obtain many city information from the urban placenames directly or indirectly.Urban placenames has become the important clue, evidence and information of socialscience, linguistics, tourism, geography, history and other disciplines study. Under thebackground of economic globalization，the rapid change of city accelerate evolutionprocess of the urban placenames. A large number of the old urban placenames whichis the repository of the city’s culture, history and memory, are disappeared. At thesame time a part of the new names which represents the characteristics of the newtimes, are emerged. For the urban placenames have a huge data which is uneasysaving. It becomes extremely difficult to obtain and inquire about the information ofthe urban placenames.This paper tries to gather the different periods data informations of the urbanplacenames. And it analysis the time, space and attributes of the urban placenames.Combining with geographic information system, it has established the urbanplacenames database, which makes it has become easy to inquire about the time, spaceand attribute data information of the urban placenames. This paper makes nearlyhundred years changing of Chengdu urban placenames as an example. Using theliterature method, statistical method, comparative analysis and chart description method and the placenames database, it analyze the evolution of Chengdu urbanplacenames in nearly a hundred years. It unearth the hidden city information anddiscusse the relationship between the city and the evolution of urban placenamesupdated.This paper analysis the research background, purpose and the significance of thisstudy. It reviews the progress on the research names at home and abroad and ChengduCity. It defines the concept of place names, urban placenames, and discusses theclassification and main functions of urban placenames and the close relationshipbetween city and city names. Then the paper analysis the time, space and attribute ofurban placenames. It summes up the the life cycle, time manifestation, temporaltopological relationships of urban placenames from the angle of time. It discussesthe name space positioning, spatial form and topological relation of urbanplacenames from the angle of space. It analysis the evolution type of urbanplacenames from the angle of the perspective. It establishes the the time, spatial andattribute data organization of urban placenames and designs the placenames database.It analysis the city information which is hidden in the evolution of Chengdu urbanplacenames in nearly a hundred years. It discusses the relationship between Chengduurban placenames and the evolution of city renewal, from the city scale, spaceutilization, industrial upgrade, government work and organization adjustment,changes of city culture, city history and the functional transformation of city land useand other aspects.
