With an increasingly frequent communication between China, a shipping power, and the rest of the world, domestic demand for modern international maritime knowledge is growing. Therefore, paying attention to the progress of the international maritime rules and timely and accurately translating original English documents into Chinese have become more and more important. Maritime English documents are characterized by long and complex sentences, mainly reflected in postpositive attributives, which make the translation very difficult. This translation practice report includes detailed introduction, investigation and conclusion of the translating process based on maritime documents translated by the author and focuses on the postpositive attributives. To find out the solutions, this report summarizes the problems in the translation practice and analyzes the related translation theories and skills. The solutions are to: split long difficult sentences, analyze the grammatical structure and meanings, find out the attributive and the antecedent which the attributive modifies so as to make complex things simple, and then translate according to the Chinese expression while ensuring accurate meaning, such as translating into Chinese pre-modifier, compound sentence or independent sentence, etc. The translator should express the original meaning and make the translation conform to the target language specification in order to ensure faithfulness and smoothness of the translation and to achieve maximum equivalence with the original.
