A Report On The English-Chinese Translation Of Adverbial Clauses In Regulating Speed:a Short-term Measure To Reduce Maritime GHG Emissions

The translation text is selected from the research report Regulating Speed:a Short-term Measure to Reduce Maritime GHG Emissions.In the translating process,the author notice that there are lots of adverbial clauses in the text.These adverbial clauses are characterized by many varieties,flexible positions and difficult translation.Therefore,the translation of English adverbial clauses is decided as the main content of paper.To satisfy Chinese language habits and express the meaning of original text,five translation methods has been summarized,they are translation in original order,restructuring,omission,lexical accommodation and annotation.Translation in original order refers to the translation according to the original word order,without adjusting the sentence structure of the original text,and is suitable for adverbial clauses with clear translation logic and simple syntactic structure.The restructuring method refers to the translation according to the characteristics of Chinese characters,and the adjustment of the word order of the original text is applicable to the adverbial clauses with complex translation logic and syntactic structure.The omission method refers to the translation of the content that does not affect the meaning of the sentence or only the connection function according to the meaning and context of the sentence,so as to make the translation more concise and smooth.The lexical accommodation method refers to translate according to semantic of sentence.The annotation refers to the explanation of the professional content of the adverbial clause,so as to facilitate the reader to understand the original content.These five methods can basically solve the translation problem of adverbial clauses,and guarantee the translation quality of the translation,and achieve a smooth transition between English and Chinese.
