The thesis is going to interpret protagonist Jim Dixon with Carl Jung’sarchetypal ideas. The notions of archetypes of the persona, the anima, the shadow andthe self are the main theories of the paper. The specific structure of Jim’sunconsciousness has some relation with character’s awareness and behaviors. Afterreading Jung’s archetypal ideas and the text, I discovered Jim’s double-personalitycould be his mask before the public, the image of anima vigorously effects hisrelationships with Margaret and Christine, the archetype of shadow gives himencourage to gain the true love and belief, the self makes him conquer all the negativesides and be mature. The task of the thesis is to decode main character Jim’s inner world and theprocess of achieving the mature self. The key theories are based on the Jung’sarchetypal ideas and his psychological concept, this paper is to dig deep into Jim’sunconsciousness, to study the influence of the four archetypes reflected in hisconsciousness and comic bizarre behaviors. Besides what mentioned above, I willdiscuss the reason for the formation of the strict hierarchic system in England andfurther research of the social meanings of the story. And the analysis of the novel is toturn main character’s actions and words onto mental level. To explore the profoundmeaning through Jung’s archetypal ideas would widen the practice of Jung’s theory inliterary works. The accomplishment of the thesis will provide a new point of view forthe text and deeper understanding of the classic piece.
