Instant messaging (IM) is a very popular online real-time forms of synchronous communication, it enables people to communicate one-to-one or one-to-many at one time. Hundreds of millions of people around the world are using IM, every day there is endless information sent via IM. The popularity of IM has already been more popular than other online synchronous communication applications, such as Internet Relay Chat (IRC). Given the widespread use of IM, scholars began to study the impact of it in the workplace. The core theme of these studies are interruption level of IM. several characteristics of IM seem likely to be directly related to the interruption. First, the mechanism of message notification, which usually are accompanied by a reminder of the dynamic visual image and voice,is uniquely interruptive. Second, although IM users provide some form of presence awareness, this tends to be a rather blunt measure of availability. Even when users are able to specify their leve of availability (such as online, do not disturb, etc.), but many users not updated frequently, this may lead to some disturbance; Furthermore, IM encourage online communication, there is no doubt that the user will always face a one-to-many online communication environment. Although the use of IM will increase the interference level, but not all interruptions are detrimental, some of the interruptions are a valuable component of work. For example, when the "interference" and is related to the current work, for example, they will be regarded as a valuable interaction, information-sharing and coordination. In addition, routine or familiar work can usually be undisturbed, IM will not do much harm to performance.Tencent QQ are the most popular instant messaging tool in China, which has more than one billion registered users. Once the number of online users at one time has exceeded1billion. What effect would QQ have by logging QQ While working? This phenomenon has not yet been treated as an psychological research target. This study will be the first to explore this problem using the strength model of self-control, confirm whether the presence QQ have an impact on the efficiency of work, and try to find method eliminate this effect. The main purpose of first research is to preliminarily explore whether logging in QQ while working will lead to self-depletion, thereby affecting the performance of second task. All of individuals are divided into three groups, non-QQ group, QQ-stationary group, QQ-runout group, and all participants first need to circle the English letter "e" out of an English paper, without any restrictions, whose time limit is8minutes. This task has been tested not to consume self-control strength in areas of self-control strength model. With first task done, all participants then get on to a Stroop test within8minutes. Accuracy on incongruent tasks is set up as the dependent variable. The AN ON VA and Post Hoc Comparison analysis indicates that significant difference between the rate of accuracy of three groups, with non-QQ group and QQ stationary group’s rate of accuracy significantly higher than QQ flashing group. Futhermore, the PANAS-X scores of three groups don’t make significant difference and fatigue of three groups stay at the same level, which indicates that their mood can’t account for the result. The aim of the second research is to find the solution to eliminate the self-control effect under QQ-flashing condition. The original hypothesis is to achieve this by hiding the icon of QQ and replace the ownership of QQ. Therefore this experiment is2(hidden*display) x2(mine*others) factor—between design, the procedure and dependent variable are the same as experiment1. In order to control covariates more precisely and retain the response information at trial-level, we use logistic hierarchical linear regression model (HLM) to fit the curve of the accuracy on each incongruent trial. The results showed that replacement regression coefficient is marginal significant, which indicates that the other-QQ group was more likely to make mistakes than my-QQ group on Stroop incongruent trials. The interaction between two factors is also significant, which means hidden-other-QQ group’s accuracy was significantly lower than display-other-QQ group, and their own QQ group hidden and show no difference in interpretation of individual use QQ,QQ instant messaging as an IM tools transmission function might be individual to produce a positive placebo effect, and this effect can offset some interference effect attention loss. When QQ is replaced by a strangers’QQ, this placebo effect disappears, and QQ fully exists as a strong distraction. So in this case QQ’s interference is strengthened. The main effect ofQQ’s state of existence is not significant,.Based on the upper two experiment’s results, we can draw following conclusions:(1) when flashing-QQ icon exists which is the message notification, even if we don’t reply the interference still exists. If you try to exclude such interference to concentrate on other tasks, you need to consume self-control strength, resulting in self-depletion. Stationary QQ icon don’t impact our attention, which is the same as non-QQ icon group.(2)Neither hiding QQ icon nor replacing QQ subjects can eliminate the interruption of ruout-QQ, if the QQ belong to a stranger, the interruption becomes more.(3) Based on the two conclusions above, we advise not to log in QQ while working or studying, otherwise you will really be interrupted and performed worse than usual.
