Emoticons are widely use and playing a very important role in computer-mediatedcommunication, especially in instant messaging as a platform for communication. So it'snecessary to do system research on emoticon of instant messaging. First, the research surveyusers' operation behaviors, then compares different presentation mode with performance anduser satisfaction, and determine the best design. There are two studies. Study1survey users' current operation behaviors and currentsatisfaction on emoticon of instant messaging. Study2by experimental method comparesdifferent presentation mode with performance and user satisfaction. Experiment1compare theusability of unorganized and organized, experiment2compare organized by frequency of useand organized by category with performance and user satisfaction, experiment3compare staticand adaptive designs on emoticon organization. And on the basis, we proposed related designprinciple on emoticon presentation mode of IM.The experiment results showed the following conclusions.1. IM emoticons are easy to distinguish between the appearance, and get high intelligibility. There are more problems in the presentation mode, there is need for improvement.2. The performance of organized is better than the unorganized, user satisfied withorganized.3. The performance of organized by category is better than organized by frequency of use, user satisfied with organized by category.4. Adding shortcut to adaptive designs could save the steps of operation and improve theperformance and satisfaction in the shortcut area, meanwhile, lower the performance in the mainarea. the use of adaptive will take some learning costs.5. The user satisfaction of adaptive is better than static, there are no significant differencein performance. Adaptive can reduce the user steps, reduce cognitive load and improve theuser's subjective satisfaction.
