American Chinese language Education, as part of the U.S. foreign language education, is bound to be influence by the U.S. Foreign policy to a large extent. With the approach of the U.S. federal government’s attitude and policy to Chinese education, this paper is to explore the history of American Chinese language education development, and focus on analyzing how the essential characteristics of American foreign language policy---"based on the national security", influence the American Chinese language education development.U.S. federal government’s attitude and policy to Chinese education is largely influenced by the Sino-US relations, so this article divides U.S Chinese education history into two main stages, taking " the establishment of diplomatic relations between the U.S and China" as dividing point.Chapter1describes" English Centrism"and "pragmatism", the two important influential factors to American foreign language education.In Chapter2, U.S Chinese education before the establishment of diplomatic relations is divided into three stages,"Before the outbreak of the Pacific War"(era of foreign language policy absence),"After the outbreak of the Pacific War""(<Army Special Training Program>),"Sino-US confrontation period "(<National Defense Education Act>), each stage will introduce its general information and main characteristics.In Chapter3, U.S Chinese education after the establishment of diplomatic relations is divided into two stages,"the context of globalization"and "post-Septemberll". The former is mainly reflected on the reform of the education system(such as SATⅡ Chinese,"5C "standard, AP Chinese), the latter mainly benefit from the impetus of <National Security Language Initiative>, this bill lifted language education to the height of the national security, Chinese is listed in the second place in "Critical Language".Considering the national security background of U.S. foreign language policies as well as China’s position and role in U.S. national security concept, Chapter2and Chapter3mainly introduce the development of American Chinese language education and its main characteristics in each stage,."Economy, Military, Democracy" ars three pillars of U.S. national security in the post-Cold War era, and take into account American strategic needs of Chinese Diplomacy, Chapter4mainly analyzes national security demands on Chinese language education in the fields including economy, military, ideology(democracy) and diplomacy.Chapter5introduces the theory of "Securitization", discuss how foreign language education is risen to the height of the national security, as well as its impact on Chinese language education. Finally, do some thinking on international promotion of Chinese language from the perspective of" language and national security".
