The Use Of "Life" And "Criticism"

The thesis is written to summarize how Richard Hoggart analyzing the working-class culture, the value and significance of his work by doing a close reading on his book The Uses of Literacy. The thesis sums up the conclusions made by Hoggart in the Uses of Literacy. Based on that, the thesis discuss how can Hoggart obtained the conclusions. At the same time, the thesis concludes an extend study to investigate the universality of theory.The thesis is concluded into three parts:The book and Hoggart himself; the logic and methods of his research, to summarize Hoggart’s point of view on mass media and working class life; the valuable part of his research, the most enlightening part especially to Chinese researchers.
