Study On A Marvelous Combination Of Eastern And Western Bel Canto From The Aspect Of The Book Of Changes

Bel Canto, also known as the Western Style of Singing, was formally introduced into China from May Fourth Movement,1919. Until now, it has almost a century’s history which gives China an opportunity to learn from the western art of vocal music, and which also represents an age of the collision and combination of the Chinese and western culture.Bel Canto is generally accepted as a highly scientific vocalization, which means that there will be a great promotion to our Vocality, if we could learn and develop the Bel Canto. However, since Bel Canto was born and fed up by the western culture with which the language and the mode of thinking are completely different from the Chinese, we can hardly master Bel Canto deeply and accurately. But art itself has the feature of creation, which teaches us to combine Bel Canto with our own culture. Thus we could promote the Chinese vocality.Nowadays, there are lots of musicians, art schools, and music groups who are studying and teaching and performing Bel Canto in China. Unfortunately, most of them spend plenty of time on studying western language, culture and tradition, trying to master Bel Canto as a real western man, and ignoring the importance of the intercourse between Chinese and western culture. The writer think, we, Chinese people can never master a pure Bel Canto as the real western do, because of our different cultural backgrounds. But we can do our own Bel Canto which combines both the goods of Chinese and western culture.This paper focuses on how to unscramble Bel Canto by using an ancient Chinese doctrine, the Book of Changes, which also known as an outstanding book of Chinese classical philosophy. The Book of Changes is the origin of Chinese traditional culture and thought and ethical practice, which elaborates the relationship of human’s fate, life, living methods and so many other aspects about our life, most of which could also be used into learning and performing Bel Canto. The writer is trying to use the viewpoint of the eight diagrams and yin-yang to rediscover Bel Canto, in order to enlighten the readers and those who study and perform Bel Canto as the writer.The emphasis of this paper is in Chapter Two, Three and Four. Chapter Two tries to build an accurate conception of voice with reconsider physical resonance, tone timbre, sound and breath under the point of view from the Book of Changes. Chapter Three focus on elaborating a few typical diagrams, which tell people to make appropriate choice under different circumstances. In other words, we need to learn and perform Bel Canto in different methods according to our own conditions.
