Icing on the overhead transmission lines is one of the main reasons which lead thetransmission tower collapse and conductor broken. It causes a great amount ofeconomic losses. With the aim of reducing the harm caused by icing, many scholarsstarted to research the technology of icing monitoring. However, the existing operatingicing monitoring systems based on electric quantity can’t work efficiently because itcan’t totally solve the problem of electromagnetic interference and power supply. Suchdifficulty can be readily overcome by fiber optic sensor due to its outstandingadvantages such as the immunity of the electromagnetic interference, no power supply, high precision and small size. The Fiber optic sensors are therefore widely used in themeasurement field. In this thesis, the weakness of the existing ice thickness algorithm is summarizedand a new algorithm is developed. The main contributions of this thesis are as follow:1. A new algorithm which takes account of ice thickness though the strainincrement of conductor is proposed.2. An icing monitoring system based on VC++6.0is developed. The systemconsists of not only user interface and menus, but also communication module for fiberoptic sensors.3. The monitoring system was sufficiently tested in the High voltage experimentbase. The precision of the system is tested by imitating the ice and comparing with theresults obtained from ANSYS. The result shows that the icing monitoring system isstable and accurate.
