The EFIs has been focused by weapon experts due to advantages of good security, better environment adaptability, short action time, and so on. However, it would be difficult to apply for conventional weapon systems because of the big volume to initiation system. So. the main way of investigation is miniaturization of initiation system. and improving the energy efficiency has been a key technology of miniaturization. A new exploding foil has been designed, matching the short charge periodic, which can obviously improve the energy efficiency of initiation system. The square wave formed foils have been designed based on the conclusion which increasing the initial resistance not only could improve the absorbed energy of the exploding foil in the circuit, but also increase the deposited energy in the initial phase of the electrical exploding, so as to improve the efficiency of the EFIs. The electrical exploding experiments with various circuit parameters showed that the energy efficiency of the square wave formed exploding foil system could be increased only if matching the short period of discharge circuit.Based on the analysis of the physical course of the square wave formed foil initiation and the form characteristic of the square wave formed foil, a model has been established for simulating the electrical exploding of the square wave formed foil initiation by modifying the existing model of resistivity of foil in an electrical exploding process, the parameters such as volume expansibility, electron density, atomic density and equivalent charge have been modified, considering the foil expanding in width and length. The results of calculation coincide well with experiments.Based on the simulation and analysis, many experiments have been carried out. The experiments show that the energy efficiency of EFIs can reach up to85%when the square wave formed foil is "single turn";4micrometers thick and the current period of the initiating circuit is508nanoseconds is much higher than the energy efficiency of the traditional square formed. Results of the research and experiments in this paper gain some conclusions which are beneficial to miniaturization design of EFIs.
