In the process of mechanical product design,people often reference the existing technology and successful experience. In the new products there are many parts have the same or similar prototype components,the design of Caterpillar vehicle also is such.The engineers of product design usually collect and sort existing design materials, product drawings and the calculation results. With his experience product design engineers analyse the difference between design target and existing data, to make sure which Information and data is reuseable in new product design, so that these existing knowledge and important experience can be reused in the design process of mechanical product.Usually this is a tedious, time-consuming, repeatedly punching process which is error-prone. In order to efficiently reuse experience of development of caterpillar vehicle,and effective apply existing successful experience and knowledge of design to the design of a new generation of product development, reduce of heavy workload, improve product redesign efficiency, reduce development costs, It is necessary to study the intelligent design method based on knowledge.This paper studies the design knowledge acquisition, knowledge representation, using methods and techniques. based on the study of the types of intelligent design system based on the KBE and system’s architecture, put forward a kind of general method of integrate the KBE and mainstream CAX software system. Aim at the design of caterpillar vehicles, Analyzes the method and principle of general layout of Caterpillar work vehicles, Constructs the scheme of the power switch and sharing of crawler work vehicular, Research the modular design methods of caterpillar vehicles,According to the structure and function characteristics of components,creat The module decomposition of caterpillar vehicle. And research the design of the key parts, research the process of the design and development of the caterpillar vehicles and parameterized modeling technology. put forward the concept and create method of spare parts prototype templates-intelligent prototype for the development of intelligent design system based on knowledge need. On the base of expound the key technology of KBE and the domain knowledge of the design of the vehicle itself, studied the functional requirements of the Caterpillar vehicles intelligent design, System structure, Knowledge organization and knowledge base created. proposed the development process of the intelligent design system based on KBE.Combined with key project "the development of crawler mobile irrigation car " of technology of water conservancy in jiangsu province, the development intelligent design system of caterpillar vehicle based on the KBE, and use this system designed a caterpillar irrigation car prototype.The intelligent design method based on KBE, not only provides a new way of realizing the rapid development of new products, shorten the development cycle, reduce development costs and will effectively liberate design and development staff from multifarious repetitive job,make them have more time and energy to undertake innovative work. Meanwhile,the intelligent design method based on KBE can extract the valuable experience,the multidisciplinary domain knowledge and constitute a knowledge base for knowledge accumulation, inheritance and reuse.
