Automobile exhaust muffler is the major component to reduce engine exhaust noise. At the present stage, most studies about exhaust muffler are in the stage of theory model, rarely considered the influence on the performance of the muffler process design. And muffler design procedure relies heavily on the experience of designers. But this design procedure is based on the experience accumulated from the theoretical model, generally do not refer to the process design. Therefore, aiming at this problem, this paper did some research on the muffler’s process design, summed up the difference between the muffler muffler’s model and actual model, studied how these differences influenced the performance of muffler, and summed up this influence rules, put forward the corresponding design guidance, combined with the muffler’s expert system of research group, wrote corresponding procedures, realized the intelligent transformation from muffler’s theory model to actual model.This paper studied the differences between muffler’s theory model and actual model, summed up the different point between muffler’s theory model and actual model, including baffle cracks, baffle flange length, baffle flange direction, the weld seam of perforated pipes, face ribs and welding spots.First, for the differences between muffler’s theory model and actual model, this paper studied its impact on the muffler pressure loss. First, built the muffler’s pressure loss test bench, through experiments, analyzed the experimental results and the simulation analysis results of muffler’s pressure loss, verified the feasibility of the simulation analysis of the muffler’s pressure loss; second, to the different point of muffler’s theory model and actual model, this paper did research one by one, summed up how these different points(baffle cracks, baffle flange length, baffle flange direction, the weld seam of perforated pipes and face ribs) influenced the muffler’s pressure loss.Second, for the differences between muffler’s theory model and actual model, this paper studied its impact on the muffler transmission loss. First, built the muffler’s transmission loss test bench, through experiments, analyzed the experimental results and the simulation analysis results of muffler’s transmission loss, verified the feasibility of the simulation analysis of the muffler’s transmission loss; second, to the different point of muffler’s theory model and actual model, this paper did research one by one, summed up how these different points(baffle cracks, baffle flange length, baffle flange direction, the weld seam of perforated pipes and face ribs)influenced the muffler’s transmission loss.This paper studied how the arrangement of muffler’s face ribs influenced the muffler’s face rigidity and model, summed up the best stamping parameters of muffler’s face ribs. This paper also studied how the distribution of muffler’s baffle plate influenced the muffler’s baffle plate rigidity and model, proposed the best distribution of muffler’s baffle plate with centre punching.Finally, this paper redeveloped CATIA software with Microsoft VB module of CATIA software, intelligent read muffler XML documents which exported from muffler expert system. This XML file contains the parameter information of muffler’s each components, then realized the intelligent transformation from muffler’s theory model to actual model.
