The grid method in architectural design is used to design space, shape and other aspects of architecture. For a long time the grid method is widely used in architectural design practice. However, the current research of its theoretical significance is very limited in domestic, and most architects who are using grid method in design practice misunderstand grid method. Since most modern architecture has regular column net, when people mention grid method, tend to associate it with the column net on drawings. In fact, modernism is to liberate the wall from the building load-bearing structure, allows the architect to create space more freedom, grid is a tool used to control the formation of the wall which create space. In order to correct this widespread misconception, and to investigation grid theory for the architectural design in our country, this paper starts with the basic problems of grid method, through summarizing commonly used in different theories, different spatial background grid method, combing the evolution process of development of grid method is verified through the analysis of grid method; Through the analysis of a large number of cases, the universal use of grid method can be verified, orthogonal grid as the representative of the practical activities as changed matrix play an important role in the world; Through the study case of the representative architects and typical pioneer architects of grid method preference, in the age of plenty theories and architecture schools, grid method is a very effective weapon to establish order in the chaos. Due to the use of grid method has universality and pioneering, the summary of grid application history is also the perspective of key nodes of modern architectural history. In this process, you can see the grid method plays an important character in building design and city development, which is useful for building design in china.
