Professor Zhang Yan has accumulated a wealth of experience of treating the disease in traditional chinese medicine. I had the honor to study from Professor Zhang. I will summarize Professor Zhang’s viewpoint and experience of treating the essential hypertension in TCM. The western medicine can lower the blood pressure quickly,but it has many shortcoming,such as side effects, fluctuation, poor compliance. TCM is mainly characterized by the concept of holism and Bianzheng Lunzhi. Treating the essential hypertension in TCM is not only lower the blood presurre, but also relieve symptoms, reduce target organ damage and offset the side effects of Western medicine.So Professor Zhang think that for the treatment of essential hypertension need to combine the western medicine and the traditional chinese medicine. Zhang treat the essential hypertension from the liver and kidney. Its etiology and pathogenesis, Bianzheng Lunzhi, prevention all focus on the liver and kidney. The etiology of essential hypertension consist of emotional disorders, improper diet, over work. The pathogenesis is the imbalance of yin and yang, abnormal movements of air, Wind&Fire and sputum. Professor Zhang treats the essential hypertension from liver and kidney, pathogenesis of entrails, to make the liver flexible, nourish kidney. The basic prescription of treating the essential hypertension is the Tian ma Gou teng Yin. In clinical,we should add or removed some drugs according to the patients. Professor Zhang also think that hypertension can be prevented from the liver and kidney.
