Ophthalmic diseases are common clinical diseases which can severely affect patients’ life quality. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has accumulated rich experience in the clinic for ophthalmic diseases, of which meridian examination is an important link in the process of diagnosis, and acupuncture and moxibustion is a kind of characteristic therapy. By combing the literatures of past dynasties, this thesis mainly elaborates the application of meridian examination and the therapy of acupuncture and moxibustion in ophthalmic diseases.This paper divides into three parts.Part One:The significance and methods of meridian examination, and it’s application in ophthalmic diseases. This paper discusses the significance, current state of research, and methods, then combs the relationgship between eyes and channels,viscera in literatures of past dynasties, ancient medicine understandings of the anatomy and physiology of eyes, as well as the application of meridian examination in ophthalmic diseases.Part Two:The acupuncture therapy in ophthalmic diseases. This paper combs relevant literatures of past dynasties, and expatiates with acupuncture cases about the acupuncture therapy in ophthalmic diseases. In addition to this, the paper collects and processes other information of various treatments, such as the therapy of moxibustion and blood letting, and has further enriched the treatment of ancient medicine in ophthalmic diseases.Part Three:Combined with the concomitance of development of modern medicine and the muscle meridian theory of traditional Chinese medicine about the therapy of acupuncture and moxibustion in ophthalmic diseases.This paper discusses modern medicine understandings of the anatomy and physiology of eyes, and then explains the muscle meridian theory in diagnosis and treatment in ophthalmic diseases. In addition to this theory, the paper collects and processes clinical cases of the famous doctors in the archaic and modern history of Traditional Chinese medicine, this could be useful in helping us to understand these theory of meridian.This theory and methods have instructional significance on diagnosis and treatment in ophthalmic diseases, so they are useful for reference in clinical practice for traditional Chinese doctors, especially professional acupuncture doctors.
