It has been always difficult and costly for people to get medical treatment for so manyyears. Therefore, as an important result of national health system reform, private hospitalsare expected to break the monopoly of public ones, to promote competition and toimprove medicare service. However, at present the development of private hospitals arenot satisfactory because there exists a series of urgent problems to be solved and quite afew of them are even facing serious challenges to their survival. In this case, how tochoose and implement appropriate development strategies so as to achieve the goal ofhealthy and sustainable development has become the concern for all owners and managersof private hospitals as well as the masses.As a medium-sized private hospital, Jinan HK Hospital was founded by an expertwho used to work for a large state-owned hospital. After nearly ten years’ operation, thehospital has seen a gradual increase in the number of patients and business volume.Nevertheless, it still faces problems of unclear positioning and strategies. Actually, itsdevelopment has hit a bottleneck and it seems to be losing momentum. This thesis is anattempt to analyze its current situation and conditions in order to come up with alternativedevelopment strategies so that it may grow into a medical group with morecompetitiveness and a famous brand name, strong enough to compete with publichospitals. By employing tools like PEST and the5-Force Model, this thesis first scansboth the general and industrial situation, then makes a detailed SWOT analysis of itsstrengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and then works out alternativedevelopment strategies with the SWOT matrix model, and finally elaborates on theirimplementation and guarantees. Through the above research, the present author holds thatHK Hospital ought to adopt the strategies of a higher level of focused specialization,differentiation and cooperation, focus on its advantages of special sections and create itsown brands so that the overall brand will become more popular and then it can seize theopportunity to march into the markets of community medicare and nursing wards forsenior citizens on the basis of cooperation. The present study is in the hope of providing HK Hospital with strategies,implementation steps and guarantee measures to get out of the bottleneck phase andachieve its goal of long-term development, so that it will stand firmly in the Jinanmedicare market sooner and get increasingly stronger in order to compete with thosepublic hospitals in terms of overall technology and size. In this way the purposes ofchecking and sustainable development will be fulfilled. In the meantime, currently thereare many other small and medium-sized hospitals founded with doctors’ personalinvestment all over the country, and therefore, hopefully, the anatomic study of Jinan HKHospital can also be applied to analyze the common opportunities and challenges facingthose hospitals, and thus valuable references may be obtained for their operation anddevelopment as well as for the civil capital about to enter the medicare market.
