In1999, on the base of the Adaptation Theory which he fermented in1980s, Jef Verschueren elaborated the dynamic process of human using language in his new work Understanding Pragmatics. He argues that the process of using language is the process of selection. According to the communicative purpose, language users adapt among the available choices to meet communicative needs.Translation is one of the cross-cultural bilingual communication activities, so it is also a form of language use. Therefore, the Adaptation Theory also establishes a coherent framework for translation studies, and this theory can and should be applied to the field of translation. In this thesis, the author firstly overviews the Adaptation Theory, nickname translation studies and nicknames of Shuihuzhuan translation studies. Then under the guide of the Adaptation Theory, the author describes the entire process of translation, revealing the adaptive strategies that translators apply during translating in order to realize their translation purposes. After that, according to the Adaptation Theory, the author analyzes Sidney Shapiro’s nickname translation in his The Outlaws of the Marsh, and based on the comparative analysis of Shapiro’s, Pearl S. Buck’s and Jackson’s nickname translation in Shuihuzhuan, points out the merits of Shapiro’s translation. Besides, as to some defects in Shapiro’s translation, the author gives some suggests. Finally, the author again argues that the Adaptation Theory has a descriptive and instructive significance in the field of translation, and proposes that scholars should carry forward the study of nickname translation of Shuihuzhuan.
