Ipswich is one of the oldest towns in England. It originated from the end of Rome Empire, experienced several times of thriving and declining, went down as the result of natural calamities and man-made disasters, inner defects and the transformation of economical geography in Britain, and at last, completely left the roll of the important economical cities in the country. Ipswich’s development and rise due to its favorable geographical location, the advantages as an early commercial center, as well as the benefits or privileges in political, religious, social and economical aspects. The developing process of Ipswich has a close relationship with the British history and economic and social development during different period of time. The research on the history of Ipswich’s development, especially its development as a port, will contribute to deepen the knowledge of regional development in the East Anglia, and it can also have a glance at the influence of British regional economic development and transformation on the eastern coastal cities.The first chapter mainly dowses the impetus of commerce to Ipswich’s early development according to the city name, while its advantageous geographical position, characteristic handicraft industry, good natural harbor and sustained development of the business promoted its first rise. But from9th century, Danish Invasions broke that good posture and Ipswich declined gradually.In the second chapter, after discussing the short silence period during Norman Conquest, it focuses on the rise for the second time and its prosperity in the following two hundred years and more. During this period, the charter, the export trade of wool and cloth as well as the king’s protection and support were the critical elements to the city.The third chapter discusses that although Ipswich struggled in all kinds of difficulties such as the natural calamities and man-made misfortunes, inner defects, internal declining and domestic economic geography pattern changed in Britain, it declined again in the whole trend of the middle ground’s "caving in". From then on, Ipswich exit from the roll of British important economical cities. After18th century, Ipswich realized its transformation in its questing.
