Since Taft and Forster created the suffix stripped model, the research on the complexedwords has been the hot spot in these years. And morphological factor was regarded as theimportant aspect that influences the word recognition of derivational words. But the subjects ofmost of the studies were native. The focus of the researh on the Chinese ones was limited to theproblem that whether the procedure was based on the whole-word processing or the decomposedprocessing. The influencing factor of visual word recognition was hardly discussed. Our targetwas to explore the characteristics of the derivational morphological words.Chinese subjects whowere good at English are invited to participate the experiments.By the method of maskedpriming paradigm, our target was to reaffirm the processing of morphological decompositionoccurred in the word recognition of derivational complexed and simple words,to find thatwhether the degree of the semantic related leads to the morpholgical effect, and the role ofsemantic、form-based and morphological factors during the recognition. In the first experiment,15participants rate rated250word-pairs on a7-point scale,112word-pairs were chosen in the end.Stimulus pairs co-varying in morphological decomposabilityand in semantic and form relatedness,namely,-M-S+O、+M-S+O、+M midS+O、+M+S+O、-M+S-O、-M+S-0,six word-pair related conditions, were presented at three SOAs(48ms、72ms、and230ms).No primg effects of form were found at any SOA. Semantic relatedness didn’tinteract with effects of morphological decomposion. But the effects of the morphology camethrough strongly at any SOAs,even for the pseudo-suffixed pairs, like archer-arch.The midS set(condition5)show no priming at any SOA,however, the highly semantically related set incontrast, did show significant effects at every SOA,The results seemed to be explained that themasked priming in the word recognition are driven by the morphological factor, and the resultsare independent of semantic factor. The second experiment reversed the order of prime and target words in order to find themorphological masked priming was driven at a central lexical level or peripheral,form-basedlevel of representation, and found the morphological priming not interacting with the semanticrelatedness. This pointed to the processing of word recognition that was driven by morphologicalfactor rather than the structure and factors of central lexical representation. After the two experiments, there were the conclusion that the recognition of the derivationalmorphological word were based on the morphological decomposition, rather than the factors andthe structure of the central lexical level, morphological factor was the important one influencingthe recognition, not the semantic one,and form one.
