From Cultural Translation To Discuss Foreignization And Domestication

The translation material of this thesis comes from The Remote Hot Spring, a short story published in 2002 by A Lai, whose novel The Red Poppy written in 1994 has gained the fifth Mao Dun Literary Prize in 2000. A Lai is also the youngest winner of this award. His writing is characterized by a poetic touch in terms of narrative style. So far The Red Poppy has been translated into 15 languages worldwide. And The Remote Hot Spring continues the style of The Red Poppy. It describes the special features of Zang Nationality in simple and common language, combining the folk culture and artistic quality in a perfect way.This thesis is divided into two parts; one is the translation part, which contains about 11,200 Chinese characters from the original text. The other is the thesis focusing on some translation problems in the translating process according to some translation theories.And the second part is composed of four chapters. Chapter I is about the basic information of the writer and the translation material.Chapter II discusses some theories related to cultural transition. Chapter III is about how to gain the equality both in the form and the function so as to promote the national culture by using this translation material.Last but not least, Chapter IV is a summary of the previous discussions, exploring the method of foreignization in cultural translation with regard to the so-called equality we manage to achieve.
