The following paper makes a close examination of the forming, development and the essence by analysing the interior factors to the forming and development of the "Shangyi style" created in the Yuan Dynasty, hoping to benefit the development of the modern Chinese mountains-and-waters painting.In the paper, factors which influenced the creation of the "Shangyi style" in the Yuan Dynasty are explord, such elements as social background and religious feelings of the time which influenced the forming and developmnt of the "Shangyi style" are analysed, and the essence existing in the style is induced, as well as the unique attention paid to objects by the painters of the Yuan Dynasty. The paper holds that the "Shangyi style" created in the Yuan Dynasty is the exterior expression of the painters’independent personality and their thoughts, which goes byond the surface information of objects but to a much greater essence, that is, the painters’life experience, cultural accomplishment and so on.In dealing with modern mountains-and-waters painting, the paper holds that the painters’ accomplishment in philosophy and literature is decisive if the traditional style of mountains-and-waters painting is to develop and blaze new trails, and they have to take the essence of the Chinese philosophy as their guiding ideology, and the "Shangyi style" as artistic technique to make explorations.
