Beijing Entertainment Development Study (1912-1928)

This paper focuses on the recreation culture in1912-1928.It tries to analyze the public impaction of recreation culture by tracing the content and the features of recreation culture from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republican era. This paper emphasizes on the development of new recreation in the1910s and1920s Beijing, such as parks,playgrounds and movies.Leisure life was the coexistence of traditional Chinese and western elements at this time,which was the special status during this period in Beijing as well as the initial model of the new recreation.The first chapter introduces the development of the traditional recreation in Ming and Qing Dynasties.It is divided into two parts.The first is on the development of traditional recreation in Ming and Qing Dynasties,in which visiting the temple and traditional sports took the main part. The second part focuses on the late Qing period, when the new recreation was spreading in Beijing,such as livestock Park and movies, in the meanwhile,traditional recreation had new trends.All of this was the cornerstone of the condition in the1912-1928periods.The second chapter focuses on the1912-1928Beijing recreation space development. With social,political,economic,cultural and demographic development, the early Republican Beijing recreation presents the new changes;traditional recreation and new recreation co-exist in this period. All of the new recreation developed quickly, such as parks,cinemas and other Western forms of recreation,which has greatly enriched the Beijing recreation system. Public recreation grew and developed at this stage,highlighting the characteristics of the times.Eventually the new mode of recreation was gradually transited from a private recreation to public recreational space.Chapter â…¢ analyzes the features of the recreation development in this period, from both the inside and outside perspectives. It discusses in the Republic of China Beijing,recreation could be featured on the blending of old and new elements,the rapid development of new recreation and the expansion of public recreation.Chapter â…£ illustrates the impact of the recreation space development.Recreation had huge impact on the public,and extended into various fields of economic,social and political.Changes brought by the recreation has caused a significant change of the Republic of China Beijing social life,and become a great driving force of development.
