In the book "The Art of Color", the famous Swiss art education expert Johannes Itten mentioned that "Color is life; for a world without colors appears to us as dead." The humanity has the color recognition instinct in the primitive time. Along with society’s development, the color is always attaching to some cultural characteristics. The color element "Chinese red" takes shape along with the Chinese5000years history. Under its ups and downs, the "Chinese red" has the obvious distinctive national features.In the modern art design, utilizing red as the main key can always arouse people’s sympathy. After thousands of years,"Chinese red" is still retaining the unique cultural implication and the national characters.This article discusses the origin and development vein of color element "Chinese red" through the scientific analysis, analyzing "Chinese red" in modern art design application, seeking its cultural value to promote the understanding of "Chinese red"This research carried on through searching literature material and collecting some data through field survey, basing on the theory of "Chinese red" and the cultural characteristic to analyze the modern art design (symbol design, poster design, public art design, new media art design).
