Works Of Cao Yu Drama "thunderstorm" Discourse Analysis

Linguistics and literature of the two subjects appear to be not related. Actually, therelationship of them is quite closely. From microcosmic angle language is the carrier of literature;alternatively literature is the practical use of language. From macroscopic perspective literaryworks can provide rich corpus for linguistic research; the theory and method of linguistics alsocan offer new perspective for literary study.Compared with western, literary stylistics is relatively weak research field in China. Bycomparison with novel stylistics and poetry stylistics, drama stylistics started later, and thepresent study is not deeply. However, the dialogism of the drama’s nature make it combine withdiscourse analysis rapidly, even so, the current research situation is still that the analysis ofoverseas plays is in the majority and the domestic play is rarely researched deeply andexhaustively. This thesis use the current popular discourse linguistics theory: the framework ofturn-taking analysis consisting of the number of turns, average lengths of turns, initiation,response, response after initiation, interruption, monologue, silence and insert words, to analyzethe drama “Thunderstorm”, trying to explore the relationship between the turn-taking theory andcharacter’s performance in the play. The analysis and exploration is not only an importantmethod of drama stylistics research, but also the bridge combined linguistics with literature. Itcontributes to read the drama, portray character, and understand the purpose of the drama.The study method of this thesis is quantitative analysis based on form and qualitativeanalysis based on description. There are five chapters in this thesis. The first chapter is theintroduction, briefly explaining the research origin, significance, corpora, current situation,method, etc. The second chapter is theory and application, focusing on the introduction ofdiscourse analysis, drama stylistic and turn-taking theory, as well as turn-taking applying indramatic dialogue. The third chapter is the introduction of “Thunderstorm” and the prologue andepilogue of the analysis by using the turn-taking theory. The fourth chapter is that with thecombination of typical dialogue among characters; separately analyze conversation of Lu Gui’sfamily, Zhou Puyuan’s family and between the two families using the turn-taking theory, and toexplore the perspective of the character and their relationship. The fifth chapter is the conclusionpart.The exploration of this paper is built on a solid linguistic foundation, with credible andeffective data illustrating the problem, enriching the existing drama criticism methods. But thedisadvantage is that only “Thunderstorm” is selected as an example, and the “Thunderstorm” isjust one of many classic dramas, and only use turn-taking framework of the discourse analysistheory. If can in combination with other pragmatics theory, we will get more rich, comprehensive understanding.
