The TV play Jin Tailang’s Happy Life successfully shapes a new and good national husband, a capricious and effeminate wife, overbearing mother-in-law, stubborn father-in-law and other characters. Each of these characters has a unique personality and distinctive character images, which are very impressive. From the perspective of turn-taking, and through the overall understanding of the turn-taking theory, this paper classifies and sorts out the corpus of Jin Tailang’s Happy Life, analyzes the dialogues between the characters by theoretical frameworks of turn-taking, and understands the shaping of the characters through every conversational turn.Generally, the shaping of characters is by virtue of their language, actions, expressions or plot, and there are few characters shaping through turn-taking by setting off each other. This paper takes turn-taking as a breakthrough point and is aimed at making a combination of the turn-taking theory and character image shaping. This paper consists of five chapters, of which the second chapter makes a specific introduction of relevant theories of turn-taking.The third chapter applies the turn-taking to analyzing the personality characteristics, language features and ideology of the characters. The fourth chapter lists the three main characters in the play, to specifically analyze how the turn-taking reflects the three characters’ personality characteristics. The fifth chapter mainly discusses some pragmatic factors which can promote the turn-taking, including the cooperative principle, politeness principle and fuzzy language. From the study of them, this paper discusses how the character images are reflected by turn-taking in the TV play Jin Tailang’s Happy Life.
