It has two difficult points for foreign students to learn Chinese characters andvocabulary. Nowadays, the Word-based Theory plays a very important role in thevocabulary teaching in TCSL, which makes the vocabulary teaching attached to thegrammar teaching. The result is that the Chinese characters which make up of word arepaid little attention. So it’s more difficult to learn vocabulary. For this reason, it’snecessary to combine the feature of Chinese characters with the rules of word-building,to strength the research of vocabulary teaching in TCSL.The present study begins with some mistakes from the students in the vocabularyteaching in TCSL, and point out the biggest disadvantages of the Word-Based Theory inthe vocabulary teaching in TCSL. It’s the lack of understanding of the charactermeaning and the word-building rules. But Character-Based Theory reveals therelationship between Chinese characters and Chinese language, gives prominence to thestructural features of Chinese characters, stresses the word-building factors of charactersand unfolds the features of its transmission. Consequently, the proposal of applying theCharacter-Based Theory to the vocabulary teaching in TCSL is presented in this thesis.Then, the teaching principles which are bases on the Character-Based Theory are putforward in this thesis. The teaching principles can be summed up as following: Firstly,characters should act as a basis and be associated with word; Secondly, Chinese classesshould be changed into the two kinds of separate classes----listening speaking class andreading writing class; Thirdly, analyze the subjective factor and objective factor ofstudents. A textbook is the most important part in teaching, so according to the currentsituation of textbooks in the vocabulary teaching in TCSL. At the end of the thesis, theauthor put forward some suggestions on its compiling.
