This paper mainly discusses the vocabulary pragmatic failure in cross-culturalcommunication. I have collected a number of vocabulary pragmatic failures of foreignstudents’ in their daily life. And then analyze the reasons why students have thesefailures. Eventually propose solutions to strategies and used in the foreign languageteaching.This paper contains five chapters excluding Foreword and Conclusion. The first tothe third chapter are the main body of this paper. The first chapter mainly discussessome related concepts in cross-cultural communication. I divided pragmatic failures intopragmalinguistic failure and sociopragmatic failure two parts. In second chapter Ianalysis the reasons why foreigners in learn Chinese have so many vocabularypragmatic failures. I think there have four reasons, cultural differences, cognitivepsychology differences, negative transfer and pragmatic teaching mistakes. The thirdchapter discusses the following seven parts one by one on how to reduce the vocabularypragmatic failures by foreigners in learning Chinese.(1) Improve their language skills.(2) Improve their cultural competence.(3) Suggest remedial methods.(4) Advocatedcultural teaching combination of language teaching.(5) Enhance the contrast betweenthe mother tongue and Chinese.(6) Use reasonable placement system.(7) Makestudents to take part in Chinese-related activities.
