A major aspect of people to thinking and reasoning is the possibility thinking. In this paper, it studys qualitative possibility matter from the aspect of categories. In the past, these studies of category mainly focused on category learning and category constructing, both of them are classified to determine the categories. That is, to provide people with known experimental materials, and asking people to classify these materials according the certain standards or rules, the only different is that category learning needs providing timely feedback about people classified correctly or not, otherwise, category constructing doesn’t need anyting about feedback. However, these studies only classify examples of categories, and didn’t study the matter of category generating, Therefore, this paper will study this matter. As the artificial concept assumes that the exemplars belonging to a category have certain numbers, but I think that people will not be able to generate all of the possibility exemplars, but some of them. Therefore, this paper only investigate possibility generating of exemplars.On the previous studies, only divergent thinking had studied possibility thinking on perception condition. But the divergent thinking tasks is about abstractly listing possibilities of use of some objects, results of event, or instances of concept and so on, and not used possibility generating tasks. Thus this present research designs two experiments to investigate the mechanism and the influencing factors of possibility generating of category exemplars. It will use the possibility generating tasks on perception condition. In Experiment1, the author aims to investigate the mechanism of possibility generating of category exemplars, that is, explore college students how to generating possibilities of category exemplars, people based on prototype or exemplars. In Experiment2, the author aims to investigate the influencing factors of possibility generating of category exemplars.The results of the two experiments are summarized as follows:(1)When college students generating possibilities of category exemplars, more based on prototype.(2)The classic of exemplar is a very important factor of effecting category generating, and the exemplar is more unclassic, the number of people generated the possibility exemplars are more, because the unclassic exemplar provided for more variation information. The contrary, the exemplar is more classic, more similar to the category prototype, then variation information is less, the number of people generated the possibility exemplars are also less.(3)For the two opposing categories, college students generated the same number of exemplars.(4)In real life, college students generated the number of possibility exemplars far less than theory number.
