"Realism" is a term closely related with our artistic practice. This word is frequently used in different contexts. The meaning of Realism is gradually blurred, which confused many artists when they try to make "realism art works". By explaining the phenomenon that realism is continually presented in art works within deferent historical periods; comparing the realism elements between American Abstractive Expressionism and Soviet Realism during the cold war; and taking a glance at the Neo-Realism movement based in New York City today, this essay tries to clarify the definition of "realism" and reveals the fact that realism is a generalized concept simultaneously integrated with the human art development in a whole cultural scope. As a conclusion, realism should be a concept to inspire the artists, but not a limitation for them.
