The part of introductionelaborates on research of “Trilogy of Campus Novel†in domestic andoverseas at present and the direction and significance of the thesis. Italso summarizes the background of the British campus novel and theinheritance of comedy. On this basis, this part is divided into twosections, one is the introduction of the writer and research status,theother is the British campus novel and the Comedy features.The First, second and third chapters are the major parts in the thesis.It is separated from the theme, character and plot parts to discuss thecomedy on “Trilogy of Campus Novelâ€. Meanwhile,the thesis makesthe “content†and “form†used in the novel together to research thecomedy of the Trilogy. Thus, it shows that David Lodge tries to integratethe realism and modernism to reveal the characteristic of the comedy.The First Chapter analyzes the comedy on the theme in the Trilogyand is divided into binary opposition and Irony of the theme. Binaryopposition is the common feature of the theme, character and plot.The first section shows the significance of comedy through the binaryanalysis which can be compared of the theme. The second sectionwhich discusses intertextuality of the theme in Changing Place andNice Work and the Parody of the theme in Small World embodies theIrony of the theme. The Second Chapter elaborates the comedy on thecharacter in the Trilogy. It contains two sections: binary opposition of thecharacter and flat character. The first section shows the comedy mainlyon the very distinct relationship between two characters; the secondsection expounds the “humorous†from a large number of flat characters created by writer and the comedy from the metaphor ofthe character’s name. The Third Chapter reveals the comedy of theplot in the Trilogy. The first section analyzes the obvious opposition onthe plot, thus we can conclude that the binary opposition is included inthe plot and expounds comic effect. The second section discusses thecomic conflict caused by a large number of coincidences. The thirdsection analyzes the meta-fiction techniques used in the plot, includingjuxtaposition, collage and the embeddedness of the novel thesis. Theform of the novel has the comedy spirit through this modern technique.The conclusion part sketches the contents of all chapters in thethesis and summarizes the reason that the Trilogy has the comedynature is the combination of the traditional and modern technique.
