Julio Tan Work Style Characteristic Analysis

Spain is a very special country, either from the natural andgeographical environment aspect or from the long river of human racedevelopment standpoint, especially in the culture and art areas, whichwith its great achievement has attracted much attention of the world.The silent short film, named "People after Mass, out of the church" hasopened the prelude to the Spanish film in the late19th century. Sincethen, the Spanish film master emerged one after another, with LuisBunuel, Carlos Saura and Pedro Almodóvar as representatives. Theyhad played a tremendous role in promoting the development of theworld film.Due to the war, dictatorship and other adverse political factors, theSpanish film industry had undergone a decline period. With the demiseof the Franco dictatorship, the film industry also started to recover, witha number of the new generation directors emerging and the mostrepresentative of which was Julio Medem. Their work was moreconcerned about personal feelings and life cognition, with politicalfactors occasionally involved, yet was rarer compared to the previousworks. For the purpose of this thesis, by analyzing and researching JulioMedem and his film work, we have come to the course and direction ofhis film. In addition, his film can also be regarded as a special case or aglimpse of the new Spanish film. Furthermore, comparing it to Spanishfilm predecessors allows us to examine the current status of the Spanishfilm in the perspective of development. In this paper, the author usesauteurism as research method, with the course of development of theSpanish film as the background, and one documentary and sevenfeature films as the material, to expand thoroughly and reveal thelineage of the Spanish film tradition of Julio Medem’s movie "the reflection of the politics”, as well as paying tribute to their film masters. Ithas showｎ in-depth analysis of Julio Medem’s movie style from visuallanguage and text features aspects and a simple comparative analysiswith other Spanish film director and works, and then summed up JulioMedem as an individual filmmaker having shown the unique featureand “auteurist”With analysis of Julio Medem’s film, the works of the new generationfilm director of Spain, we concluded that: First, political penetration inJulio Medem’s movies was much more obvious. He filmed adocumentary about ethnic conflict. It reflected the political situation ofSpain in a straightforward manner and showed his position in anobscure yet clear way-the existence and development of nationalcharacteristics and cultural should be allowed and protected under thepremise of respect for social diversity. In addition, he also filmed somefeature films with political matters involved. From his political work, wecan see Julio Medem’s yearning and longing for peace anddemocracy, and his irony for war, despotism and exclusion. Secondly, inall his works, Julio Medem has maintained a "change reality to fantasyand yet true" magic realism creative style and narrated to theaudience about his view on life, love and destiny. He thought that therewas countless coincidence or already doomed fatalism. Thirdly, in thefilm making process, Julio Medem thrived to reach excellence: paintingtexture footage, high-quality music audio and smooth montage of clips,making the audio-visual language highly stylized. Literary, dramatic text,are close to Marquez, the representative of the Latin American literarygiant and the film master Luis Bunuel, which paying tribute to them.Finally, in the direction of film-making, there was trend of evolving froma purely artistic to the mix of artistic and commercial development.There are more detailed arguments and statements about the abovearguments in the body of this paper. I hope this paper will act as a driver to allow more in the industryand the general audience have a more in-depth understanding of JulioMedem and his works, and also attracts the attention andconsideration to the Spanish film art.
