On the basis of terror management theory, it was hypothesized thatwhen mortality is made salients would respond especially positivelytoward those who uphold cultural values and especially negativelytoward those who violate cultural values. The goal of this research is totest whether difference between western and Chinese has.Three experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis, derivedfrom terror management theory, that reminding people of theirmortality increases attraction to those who consensually validate theirbeliefs and decreases attraction to those who threaten their beliefs; That reminding people of their mortality increases in-group bias, that itto say, people have more homogeny, social identity and cohesion inface to their mortality. In study1, subjects were asked to formimpressions of two essays, one of which validate their beliefs that Chinahas sovereignty in the Nanhai Sea, the other of which threaten theirbeliefs that China has not sovereignty in the Nanhai Sea. Before doingso, mortality was made salient to half of the subjects. In support ofpredictions, mortality salience led to more positive evaluations of essayto validate their beliefs, but mortality salience don’t led to morenegative evaluations of essay of threaten their beliefs. In study2,mortality salience led to more in-group bias in homogeny, social identityand cohesion. What’s more, mortality salience led to more positiveevaluations of the in-group number (Chinese), but didn’t lead to morenegative evaluations of the out-group number (Japanese). In study3,mortality salience didn’t led to difference in the task of resourceallocation. Moreover, mortality salience led to more negativeevolutions of the out-group number (Japanese football), but didn’t ledto difference evolutions of the in-group number (Chinese football). These three studies have provided support for Terror Management Theory.
