Among nowadays China Art, the bienial and triennial exhibitions held by some big cities improve a lot and have a great impact on contemporary art. This mode of exhibition is introduced from the west. As the firts successful biennial exhibition in China, the1992’s Guangzhou Biennial Exhibition provides great reference value for the followed art exhibitionstill now in many aspects such as exhibition process, operating mechanism, promotion andpublicizing, and thinkings of art essence. This essay descibes the origin, development, contents, and termination of the1992’s Guangzhou bienial exhibition in a historical trail, and trys to redefinites thisexhibition’s impacts and status in China’s art exhibition field. Moreover, through systemmatical analysis and reconsideration of the first Guangzhou bienial exhibition’s original materials, we give a summary of the reasons for its defects and limits, and hope to find out someadvantages and disadvantages of China’s art exbihition system from the analysis of this essay.
