Since the1990s, visual novel becomes a hot topic in mass culture dissemination age. It is not only one of the most influential and popular form of mass communication, but also a new energy of novel creation. This article based on " visual novel " as the research object, using visual culture, intertextuality, aesthetic criticism, space narrative theory knowledge and so on, and the theory of explanation, logic, analysis as well as comparison method, on the basis of previous studies, combined with times background of the public, consumption culture and visual culture linguistic, makes a comprehensive and systematic thinking and discussion of visual novel’s features, aesthetic style, the rising background and reason and the process of its production, dissemination and accept. Through the analysis of its production and spread process as well as its characteristics, we can see the meaning and limitations of visual novel.This thesis consists of four parts:The first chapter defines the concept of visual novel, combined with the social background of the public, consumer culture and visual culture, makes the visual novel as narrow sense and broad sense. Closely around the concept of visual novel, from a general point of view, explores the new form of literature.The second chapter discusses visual novel’s production, dissemination and the reason of its development. Firstly, this article describes the development of visual novel in China, and the main writers’products, as well as the production method and communication strategy. Secondly, from the internal cause and external cause, makes the analysis of its rise reason, especially discusses the novels intertextuality text characteristics. Finally, this article compares the visual novel and the novel film adaptation, emphasizes its art value and commercial features.The third chapter focuses on the emotional connotation characteristics of visual novel. Firstly, this article makes a brief overview of visual novels’ diverse characteristics, and makes specific analysis of three themes’characteristics and rising reason of family ethics drama, history of espionage drama and palace intrigue drama. Secondly, through specific text analysis, this article highlights the characteristics of its plane ideological content, its common emotional content. Finally, from the visual novel’s narrative plot, emphasizes the characteristics of the fictional story and entertainment.The fourth chapter discusses the narrative and aesthetic characteristics of visual novel. Through specific text analysis, highlights the novel’s narrative montage and spatial narrative feature, emphasizes the visual modeling of the novel’s language and the game features of history.In conclusion, the rise of the novel and the large scale development is very significant. Although it also has certain limitation, its value is beyond doubt. It has not only enriched the writers expression, adding a special literary form, but also made the general public get entertainment, at the same time do the enlightenment and education, More important is it add vigor For the new period novels.
