The gate as a physical entity,which reflects the true state of social and historical evolution.The social hierarchy,ideology,behavior can be seen from the gate,and the gate culture is produced.The gate culture content is widespread.This article mainly consider the gates of Chang’an in Sui and Tang Dynasties as the research object,sort out gate naming,gate function and gate system,in order to analyze the spatial characteristic of Chang’an City in Sui and Tang Dynasties from the cultural inheritance and the development angle.The city of Chang’an in Sui and Tang Dynasties which planed orderly,which has different types of gates.These gates as joint points,which play important role in political activities and system operation,and reflect the social hierarchy and the authorityThis paper consists of five parts,and the content mainly involes three aspects.The first second chapter discuss the cultural connotation of the name of the gates in Chang’an City,and the reasons of the gates changed. Chang’an City has many types of gates.The name of gates has rich historical and cultural connotations,and the name which related to Yin Yang and five elements,religious cultural and other traditional culture factors.The gates name in Chang’an City is influenced by social political,cultural systems and other factors,which reflects the correlation between gates and social.Chapter III is mainly based on the literature,and collect the activities and events of different types of gates in Chang’an, and discuss the significance of social and cultural.Differernt types of gates play an important role in the capital.The gates of Palace divide Miyagi region into some independent space,which reflects the power boundaries.The gates of Imperial City as the connection area between Miyagi and outside city,become an important place which holds royal activities.The gates of the outside city as an important transportation,which plays role in foreign exchange. This chapter also take the gate of Guangshun in Darning Palace as the example,which restore and discuss the activities in the near of gates,and strengthen the research contents.The forth chapter discuss the function of gates of Chang’an city in Sui and Tang Dynasties on the basis of gate activities.Gate function is influenced by the types of gate,the rank difference of urban space is notable.The gates of palace city,imperial city and outside city,as an independent space,which build the characteristic stage in the capital of social life.The gates as static geographical space and the flow social space,which reflect special function of gates. The gates of Chang’an,as the stage of showing ceremony of Tang Empire.The gates of Chang’an have the basic function of transportation and defense,and also have rituals,ceremony,public media,foreign exchange and other special function.The fifth chapter mainly discuss the management system of gates in Sui and Tang Dynasties,and explore the relationship between power operation and management of urban space.Different types of gates in Chang’an city which is not only an important transportation channel of the capital city,but also an important component of maintaining the capital city space order.Chang’an is the typical city of the ancient capital system,the government use the gate membership system,the curfew system,open and close gates,repair gates,in order to strengthen the defense and stability.A series of system for different types of gates,which reflects the correlation between power operation and management of urban space.The cultural research about the gates of Chang’an in Sui and Tang Dynasties,which has greatly enriched the contents of gate culture,and has important academic significance in the history of Sui and Tang Dynasties and the study of China’s ancient capital.
