This thesis focuses on two issues:(1) research on visual form and visual perception;(2) research on the relation between Calvino’s theory of novel creation and visual. On this basis, this thesis aims to explain the function of visual in the relationship between human and their external world, and the relation between visual image and lingual art in the development of art. Research on visual form predominated in form study:Plato divided form into internal form and external form and Aristotle treated form as crucial component element of all things; in the beginning of1900s, form developed from a technical concept into an ontological category, which is also a leading concept indicating the holistic style of art. We then investigate the relation between visual form and artistic will, which focus on the form of visual art, including form content, characteristic, and style change. As a kind of external form, it will necessarily abide by characteristics and disciplines of form. Artistic will, which belongs to the manifestation of visual art form, is a kind of that combining literature, philosophy, and religious into human cognitive process. On visual perception, we discuss at the path of philosophy. Merleau Ponty’s visual reposes on Husserl’s phenomenology, therefore. The task of phenomenology is to explain our living experience comprehensively, and to describe the components of our ling experience veritably. Research on visual perception is very helpful to the research of Calvino’s creation theory. Since Calvino had been aware of the issue about interpreting the relation between human and external world with phenomenology, this thesis mainly analyze the relation between Calvino’s writing and visual perception. Which is more important, Crystal theory stated by Calvino had played a role of innovation to postmodern fiction theory. Moreover, his combination of novel, picture, and visual, commendably perfected the transition from picture to language in a kind of "visual language".This thesis falls into3chapters:Chapter1discusses the generation and development of form and visual form, which mainly analyze the development of visual form and artistic form, and thus provide a foundation for the issues afterwards.Chapter2elaborates the complicated relations among visual perception, literature, and development of artistic forms. Through the illustration of Merleau Ponty’s theory of visual perception, we analysis all links related to the theory of visual perception in the Calvino’s writing process, and we also anatomize the forms of Calvino’s novel aiming to make certain of the mode that writers view the world and how it reflect in their own novels.Chapter3is the conclusion of this thesis, which mainly focuses on the expressing style of visual culture in literary and artistic creation. In this chapter, we briefly discuss the function of visual culture in literary and artistic creation under the guidance of related theory of philosophy, anthropology, and semiology.
